Peter Etchell’s Story: Where it all started

Monday 18th August 2024

Asia Giuliani

“One thing I’ve learnt from an East End community is that they bury working class history- they bury it. But when you’re dead they might talk about you, ‘cus’ you can’t do anything then.”

Global Routes Project was inspired by a day out taking pictures on the 12th August 2017 in Bow, London. Asia Giuliani and Anastasia Kyria met Swopon, a Bengali/Italian pizzeria owner, who was frustrated by local customers’ tastes of eating pizza with ketchup and garlic sauce; Anees, a worker at Bow Tyres who had just had his cash box stolen; and Peter Etchells, who was blasting music outside his house - a well known Eastender who once drove a lorry through Buckingham Palace gates in protest to his friend being unlawfully imprisoned. ‘George Davis is Innocent OK’ became a well-known and successful campaign for justice. The late Peter Etchells’ story, which is soon to feature in a Sky History Documentary, using the audio and images from that day, is shown here. Thank you to Peter’s family for supporting this project.
